Business Energy Contract Renewal: Switch Before It Auto-Renews

A step-by-step, jargon-free guide for small business owners whose gas or electricity contract is ending - how to read the renewal notice, why auto-renewal costs more, how to get a free comparison and how Equal Payments arranges the switch at no cost.

Your business energy contract is ending - what now?

Every business energy contract has an end date, and most owners only notice it when a renewal letter lands on the desk. By then the clock is already running.

If your gas or electricity contract is coming to an end, this is the moment to act. Here is what happens, what to watch out for, and how to switch to a cheaper deal without doing the legwork yourself.

What "contract ending" actually means

When your fixed-term contract finishes, your supplier has to keep supplying you - but almost never at the same price. Most suppliers move you onto a deemed or out-of-contract rate, which is usually their most expensive tariff. There is no negotiation, no loyalty discount and no phone call asking if you are happy. The rate simply changes.

That is why the weeks before your end date matter far more than the weeks after it.

Why auto-renewal costs more

Many business contracts include an auto-renewal clause. If you do nothing, the supplier rolls you into a new fixed term - often 12 months - at a rate they set, not one you agreed.

Three things tend to go wrong:

  • You pay more than you need to. Out-of-contract and auto-renewed rates are rarely competitive, because suppliers know the switch is easy to miss.
  • You get locked in again. Once the new term starts, leaving early can trigger exit fees.
  • You lose the best window to switch. Suppliers want notice before your end date, and that window closes quietly.

Ask most business owners what unit rate they are paying and they haven't got a clue. That is not a failing - energy bills are built to be hard to read. But it does mean the money quietly leaves the business every month.

Step 1: Find your end date

Pull out your last bill or your original contract and look for two things:

  • The contract end date (not the bill date).
  • Any notice period you have to give to leave or renegotiate - often 30 to 90 days.

If you cannot find either, that is normal. The details are buried in the paperwork, and it is exactly where a broker earns their keep.

Step 2: Check what you are paying now

You do not need to become an energy expert. You need three numbers from your bill:

  • Your unit rate (pence per kWh) for gas and for electricity.
  • Your standing charge (pence per day).
  • Your annual usage in kWh, or your monthly spend if usage is not shown.

Those three figures are enough to compare you against the market. Without them, any quote is guesswork.

Step 3: Compare properly, not just on price

Cheaper is good. Cheaper with the right contract is better. When you compare, look past the headline rate at:

  • Contract length - a lower rate on a longer lock-in may not suit a business that could move premises or grow.
  • Exit fees - what happens if your circumstances change.
  • Green tariffs - 100% renewable electricity is widely available and often competitively priced, not a premium add-on.
  • Supplier service - the cheapest rate is no bargain if billing goes wrong and nobody answers.

Step 4: Arrange the switch before the deadline

Once you know your end date and a better rate exists, the switch itself is mostly admin - meter readings, a contract, and the supplier handling the transfer. The trick is timing it so the new contract starts when the old one ends, with no gap and no exit fee.

That is the part that trips people up. Get it right and the switch is seamless. Get it wrong and you either pay an out-of-contract rate or an early exit penalty.

How Equal Payments does it for you

We are an independent business energy broker. We do the comparing, the paperwork and the chasing, so you do not have to ring round suppliers or decode a single bill.

Here is how it works:

  1. Upload your bill. One file - gas, electricity or both.
  2. We compare the market. We check your usage against 35 UK suppliers, for gas, electricity and 100% green tariffs.
  3. You get a quote within 24 hours. Plain English, showing the rate and what you would save.
  4. We arrange the switch. You pick the contract; we handle the supplier and the transfer.
  5. It costs you nothing. Suppliers pay our fee, so there is no charge for you - ever.

No jargon, no call-centre runaround, no cost. Just a cheaper contract arranged for you.

The cost of doing nothing

An out-of-contract rate does not announce itself. It shows up as a slightly bigger direct debit, month after month, until someone asks why the energy line has crept up.

If your contract is on or nearing its end, the cheapest thing you can do today is check. Send us your bill and we will tell you - free - whether you are overpaying and what a switch would look like.

Ready? Upload your bill and get your free comparison within 24 hours.
